The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold its next book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 14 on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Proceeds from sales help support the needs of the Kona libraries, with funding that includes educational and entertainment programs, summer reading programs, visiting authors, magazine subscriptions, CDs, DVDs and new book purchases. This sale includes a large inventory of books from the closure of the library in Holualoa. FOLK’s next sale will be May 12.

KeikiFest in Waimea April 14

The Waimea Healthy KeikiFest will be held April 14 at the Parker Ranch Shopping Center in Waimea. This annual celebration, for children ages 3 to 12, features a variety of hands-on learning experiences about growing up safe and healthy. KeikiFest is organized by Tutu’s House. Korean War veterans meeting April 14

A meeting of the Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 begins at 10 a.m. April 14 at Denny’s Restaurant in Kailua-Kona. Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in any of the Armed Forces of the United States, defined as Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard if said service was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace at any time September 3, 1945 to the present, or said service was outside of Korea June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955. Mauna Kea Quilters meet April 14

Founded in 1997, Mauna Kea Quilters is a group of patchwork quilters who enjoy sharing their love of quilting with others.

The group donates quilts to raise money in support of local organizations, such as Waimea Middle School’s culinary garden program and Relay for Life. The group gives quilts to the police and fire departments and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need. At Christmas, Mauna Kea Quilters provides stockings and quilts to needy children.

Interested quilters are welcome to sit in on the group’s next meeting and show-and-tell session, from 9:30 a.m. to noon April 14 in the meeting room of the Thelma Parker Memorial Library. For more information, call Becky Parkinson at 937-2159.

HPA celebrates Earth Day

Hawaii Preparatory Academy, recently recognized as a Green Ribbon School by the Hawaii State Department of Education, will host two community events to celebrate Earth Day. Both events are free and open to the public.

An earth oven building workshop is planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 15 at the school’s Ulumau Garden, located at the Village Campus. Skye Hoefke, natural materials builder and earth block mason, and Noah Dodd, HPA’s Ulumau Garden coordinator, will lead the workshop. There will be a potluck lunch. From 9 a.m. to noon April 21, HPA celebrates Earth Day with “Sustainable Practices, Cultural Preservation, and Transformation,” at the school’s terrace farm, located at the Upper Campus. Kumu Kuwalu Anakalea will open the event with a blessing, followed by a keynote by HPA alumnus Mike Vitousek. An assistant Hawaii Island archaeologist with the State Historic Preservation Division, Vitousek will present “A Historical Perspective of the Waimea Terrace Sites.” Visitors may check out demonstrations and workshops on varied topics such as bamboo construction and aquaculture and may take a tour of the school’s energy lab. Community members also can bring their old incandescent bulbs to exchange for compact fluorescent lamps, while supplies last.
